01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

One person who took home a sashimi assortment reported finding octopus, sea bream, yellowtail, lean tuna, salmon and horse mackerel, each served with a different garnish, such as Japanese pepper leaves, spring onion or ginger. Part of the pleasure is trying the pairings: Japanese pepper leaves with sea bream, for instance, and spring onion and ginger with horse mackerel. The selection may vary depending on when you order, but it sounds like a lovely centrepiece for a meal at home, with garnishes chosen to complement each fish.

For a fish dish in the restaurant, consider the fresh-fried horse mackerel. One diner singled out the crisp finish and tartar sauce, which has a subtle hint of squid ink. The menu also lists other fried dishes, including asparagus tempura and cucumber in dashi. There are plenty of other ways to enjoy the seafood, too: options include steamed milt with sake, clams grilled with Saikyo miso and grilled conger eel, as well as seafood mapo tofu and sakura shrimp peperoncino. Traditional Japanese seafood dishes sit alongside more unexpected choices.

Unari is primarily a standing bar. One diner described choosing drinks and snacks from a refrigerated case and telling a staff member what they had picked. It can suit a solo visit for a few bites of fish, or a leisurely round of small dishes paired with beer or another drink.
